In 2015, Article 733 of Japan’s Civil Code that states that women cannot remarry 6 months after divorce was reduced to 100 days.

Ms Oyamada’s novel depicts the life of a housewife in Japan as one of soul-crushing banality. Asahi quits her part-time office job to relocate with her husband.
